How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh for Longer

A fresh bouquet adds beauty, colour, and a pleasant atmosphere to any room. However, without proper care, cut flowers may begin to lose their freshness within just a few days. Following a few simple steps can help your bouquet stay beautiful for much longer.

Start With a Clean Vase

Before placing the flowers in a vase, wash it thoroughly with warm water. Bacteria left inside the vase can quickly contaminate the water and damage the flower stems.

Fill the vase with clean, room-temperature water. Extremely cold or hot water is generally unsuitable for most cut flowers.

Trim the Stems Correctly

After receiving your bouquet, trim approximately 1–2 centimetres from the bottom of each stem. Make the cut at roughly a 45-degree angle. An angled cut creates a larger surface area and helps the flower absorb water more effectively.

Use a clean, sharp knife or pair of scissors. A blunt tool may crush the stems and make water absorption more difficult.

Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Remove any leaves that would sit below the surface of the water. Submerged leaves begin to decompose quickly, encouraging bacterial growth and creating an unpleasant smell.

Healthy leaves above the waterline can remain in place.

Change the Water Regularly

Replace the water every day or at least every two days. Each time you change it, rinse the vase and trim a small section from the stems again.

When flower food is included with the bouquet, add it to the water according to the instructions on the packet.

Choose the Right Location

Place the bouquet in a cool, bright area away from direct sunlight, heaters, strong air-conditioning, and draughty windows.

It is also best to keep flowers away from fresh fruit. Some fruits release ethylene gas, which can cause flowers to age and wilt more quickly.

Remove Wilting Flowers

Remove any flowers or leaves that begin to wilt or become damaged. This keeps the arrangement looking attractive and may help the remaining flowers stay fresh for longer.

With clean water, properly trimmed stems, and a suitable environment, your bouquet can preserve its colour, fragrance, and natural beauty for many more days.
